Three Lions Coach Reveals The Approach: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.

In the past, the England assistant coach was playing in League Two. Today, he is focused on helping the head coach win the World Cup in the upcoming tournament. His journey from athlete to trainer started with a voluntary role for Accrington's Under-16s. He recalls, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and it captivated him. He had found his calling.

Metoric Climb

The coach's journey is incredible. Commencing as Paul Cook’s assistant, he developed a name through unique exercises and strong interpersonal abilities. His stints with teams included elite sides, while also serving in coaching jobs abroad across multiple countries. He has worked with big names such as Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Currently, in the England setup, it's all-consuming, the top as he describes it.

“All begins with a vision … However, I hold that obsession can move mountains. You envision the goal but then you bring it down: ‘How can we achieve it, gradually?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. We must create a systematic approach so we can to maximize our opportunities.”

Detail-Oriented Approach

Obsession, especially with the smallest details, defines Barry’s story. Putting in long hours under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, the coaching duo challenge limits. The approach feature mental assessments, a plan for hot conditions for the finals abroad, and building a true team. Barry emphasizes the England collective and avoids language such as "break".

“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a break,” Barry notes. “It was vital to establish a setup that attracts the squad and they're pushed that going back is a relief.”

Ambitious Trainers

The assistant coach says and the head coach as “very greedy”. “We want to dominate every aspect of the game,” he states. “We strive to own every metre of the pitch and we dedicate many of our days on. Our responsibility to not only anticipate of changes but to beat them and innovate. It's an ongoing effort with a mindset of solving issues. And to clarify complicated matters.

“We get 50 days alongside the squad prior to the World Cup. We have to play a sophisticated style for a tactical edge and we have to make it so clear during that time. It’s to take it from thought to data to understanding to action.

“To build a methodology that allows us to be productive in that window, we have to use all the time available since we took the job. When the squad is away, it's vital to develop bonds with each player. We have to spend time in calls with players, we have to see them in stadiums, understand them, connect with them. If we just use the 50 days, we have no chance.”

Final Qualifiers

The coach is focusing for the final pair for the World Cup preliminaries – versus Serbia in London and away to Albania. They've already ensured their place at the finals after six consecutive victories and six clean sheets. Yet, no let-up is planned; quite the opposite. This is the time to build on the team's style, for further momentum.

“The manager and I agree that the football philosophy must reflect all the positives of English football,” Barry explains. “The athleticism, the flexibility, the strength, the honesty. The national team shirt should be harder than ever to get yet easy to carry. It ought to be like a superhero's cape instead of heavy armour.

“For it to feel easy, we have to give them an approach that enables them to play freely as they do in club games, that connects with them and encourages attacking play. They need to reduce hesitation and more in doing.

“You can gain psychological edges you can get as a coach in the first and final thirds – building from the defense, closing down early. But in the middle area of the pitch, those 24 metres, we feel the game has become stuck, notably in domestic leagues. All teams are well-prepared currently. They know how to set up – defensive shapes. Our aim is to focus on accelerating the game across those 24 metres.”

Thirst for Improvement

Barry’s hunger for development is all-consuming. During his education for his pro license, he felt anxious over the speaking requirement, since his group contained luminaries such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. So, to build his skill set, he sought out tough situations available to him to practise giving them. Including a prison in Liverpool, where he also took inmates for a training session.

Barry graduated with top honors, with his thesis – The Undervalued Set Piece, for which he analysed 16,154 throw-ins – was published. Lampard included impressed and he brought Barry on to his staff with the Blues. When Frank was fired, it spoke volumes that the team dismissed most of his staff except Barry.

Lampard’s successor with the club took over, within months, he and Barry won the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry stayed on under Graham Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced at Munich, he recruited Barry of Chelsea and back alongside him. The Football Association consider them a duo similar to Southgate and Holland.
